An Unwelcome Guest

We, Indians, are well known for our hospitality. In India, guest is regarded superior to God. But at certain times if certain guests arrive, we feel reluctant to show our hospitality we are famous for. Although kind-hearted as we are, sometimes we become chicken-hearted owing to the circumstances imposed on us.

One such incident occurred about 2 years back on the 26th of January, 1991 when we were to go to a picnic at Gandhi Sagar Dam. I packed my baggage and handed it to mummy. I and my brother were too excited. Indeed we were making a mountain out of a mole hill. As we got ready and put the baggage inside the car, a jeep seemed to arrive in our colony. We took no notice of that jeep till it stopped at our gate. And indeed the saying 'Man proposes, God disposes' seemed to come true as our Uncle 'X' and his family had come. We disheartedly asked them to come inside and then we had to offer them lunch and entertain them. Indeed it was an awfully miserable day for us as all our plans had crumbled like the glasshouse that has been shattered by an earthquake measuring 10 on Richter's scale.

Though, with smiles on our face, we looked after the comforts of our guests, in our hearts we cursed them for being an unwelcomed guest whose arrival had foiled our plans. They left in the evening but by then the balloon of our mood, which was inflated in a week's time with much energy and enthusiasm, was deflated slowly in a day's time, leaving all of us quite depressed.
